I’m a competitive person. If you only know me a little, you might not know this. Actually, even if you knew me pretty well, you might still never think of me as competitive. But I’ll tell you now, that fire is in there and sometimes it leaks out. Case #1: My attempt to dominate Everlong on Rockband 2.

Ski Base Repairs and Waxing: Done!

Whistler-Blackcomb opened a couple weeks early today and the local hills have had a healthy dusting of snow too. Alas, temperatures are rising and precipitation is coming in, so the local snow may quickly get washed away, but luckily this has bought me a wee bit more time to get ready for the season. First up: ski base repairs and waxing. These two to-do’s fall into categories of “things I’ve always been meaning to learn how to do and get around to actually doing but for one reason or another never got around to”. Thanks to advice from friends, extra motivation with the latest snowfall, and the wonders of the internet, I can check these two off.

The Dream Year Lottery

On my way walking to the U2 concert last week, I noticed a few people along the way asking for spare change. I didn’t think much of it until a little later in the night. Standing inside BC Place, full with 60,000 people, the thought just dawned on me: This is a lot of people. What if each person in here just threw $1 into a giant hat and gave it to one of those people outside asking for spare change. What would they do with that money? Then the self-interested part of me kicked in, and this got me thinking. What if 60,000 people chipped in $1 and gave that all to me? What would I do?

Stoking the Winter Fire

With the first sprinkling of snow hitting the nearby hills (not quite on the local ones yet, but coming soon!), my mind’s been drifting to thoughts of winter. To help stoke the fire, I’ve been checking out a few ski videos – some good finds courtesy Doglotion, a freeskiing web magazine run by an old friend of mine. Other than getting psyched for the snow to fall, the guys in these videos have some inspiring words. Here are a couple recent favourites.

Thinking of Possibilities

It’s been a busy last few months since I last regularly posted here. I’ve started writing for a few other hobby blogs, launched a couple web apps with my brother, launched some major projects at work…the list goes on. Life flies by when you get busy, and it’s just zoomed right by the last little while. Sometimes it goes by so fast that if you don’t take that time to slow things down, or you don’t experience anything else to change your momentum, you never get a chance to stop and think. Lucky for me that busy-ness got a couple breaks and I’ve had a chance to re-focus.

Great Moments in Music Awesomeness

Here’s a post I update on an on-going basis. Great Moments in Music Awesomeness is my list of favourite hooks, transitions, bridges, choruses, beats etc… Some great moments will undoubtedly come from great hits. Others will come from songs and singers and bands I’d otherwise probably be embarrassed to admit to liking. In some cases it will have a very clear reason for being on the list, for others, the only criteria may be that it just conveys a sense of awesomeness that only music can.

Chicken Wings: From Good Eats to Great! Thank You Alton Brown

There are some foods that people take for granted, and a good batch of chicken wings is one. There are lots of ways to prepare wings, but by and large most wing recipes have one thing in common: they’re greasy and over-powered with some kind of sauce – all you taste is bbq-flavoured greasy fat. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
