On the To-Do List: Dominate Everlong on Rockband2

I’m a competitive person. If you only know me a little, you might not know this. Actually, even if you knew me pretty well, you might still never think of me as competitive. But I’ll tell you now, that fire is in there and sometimes it leaks out. Case #1: My attempt to dominate Everlong on Rockband 2.

For me, competition isn’t so much about me beating you. Well, maybe it is sometimes…but the kind of competition that really gets me going, is the kind where I’m pitted against a challenge and it’s all just me – where success or failure is all in my own hands. It’s this inner competitiveness that drew me into long-distance running and is drawing me into other solo ventures like x-country skate skiing and road biking. And now, thanks to a night of Rockband 2 at my friend, Geoff‘s, place, the competitive itch inside of me is pulling me into video games.

I originally went over to check out the new Pearl Jam songs that Geoff bought earlier in the week. So far he only has the drum kit, so we took turns on the throne. After a few rounds of playing the new PJ songs, with a little Spoonman, a little Journey, some Chilli Peppers, and Motorhead thrown into the mix, I scanned the list and found one of my favourite songs of all time: Everlong from the Foo Fighters.

This has got to be one of THE best songs of my generation when it comes to popular songs with a killer drum track. Before I ever bought a cheap set of drums, I used to air-drum this song incessantly. I never quite knew at the time how close to the real thing I was getting (I mean, you’d sound like a rockstar too when you’ve got a set of headphones on and are hitting nothing but your lap and the air). And the verdict after attempting Everlong on Expert, and then Hard, and then Medium? As it turns out, I’m not as good as I thought I was.

BUT, this is where my competitiveness kicks in, where a challenge is presented before me and I can either succeed or fail – it’ll all be in my hands.

My goal? To do this:

It’ll be a little hard to get there without a video game console of my own, but baby steps…
