Great Moments in Music Awesomeness

Posted on: 2 Comments

Here’s a post I update on an on-going basis. Great Moments in Music Awesomeness is my list of favourite hooks, transitions, bridges, choruses, beats etc… Some great moments will undoubtedly come from great hits. Others will come from songs and singers and bands I’d otherwise probably be embarrassed to admit to liking. In some cases it will have a very clear reason for being on the list, for others, the only criteria may be that it just conveys a sense of awesomeness that only music can.

Here’s the list:

Song Artist What, When, and Why
Talons Bloc Party Transition at the 3:25 mark for its awesomeness
The Greatest Man that Ever Lived Weezer Transitions from 2:43 onwards for its crescendo; And also for its use in Warren Miller’s Children of Winter for getting me stoked for skiing!
Fix You Coldplay Ok, this is an obviously cheezy one. But you can’t deny its back-tingling-feel-good-ness. Build up to the “guitar solo” at 2:34, then the build up to the final 4-choir-boys-chorus.
Boomerangs (Memories Like) Streetlight Opening guitar riff because it reminds me of a morning stroll down Main street. And the bridge at 2:30 for setting off that morning on Main street feel again.
Taking Abalonia Said the Whale The build up immediately following the quiet intro from 1:10 – 1:25 – because it’s like a pot of sugar water boiling up to sweet goodness!
Unforgettable Season Cut Copy Opening 20 seconds for its energy-building-”I’m waking up in the morning of a sunny day” kind of feeling.
Magnificent U2 The 46 second mark, thanks in part to the preceding build-up – for its classic U2 anthem crescendo. I’m predicting at least one team in the NHL will remix this into a loop that plays when the team hits the ice.
Amongst the Waves Pearl Jam The opening 45 seconds for it’s lyrics, playful mood, and uplifting lead in into the chorus.
